Permanent, Patrol, and Reserve; Law Enforcement Will Operate in Three Units for The Election

The Election Commission has announced a three-tier security plan for polling centres, with law-enforcement agencies and the armed forces given expanded authority to maintain order during the upcoming polls.

After a meeting with top officials of the law-enforcement agencies at the Election Commission office today, EC Secretary Akhtar Ahmed briefed journalists on the decisions.

According to him, one team from the law-enforcement agencies will be deployed permanently at each polling centre to provide round-the-clock security. A second team will work as a mobile force, conducting continuous patrols and, where necessary, operating permanent checkpoints. A third team will remain on standby as a central reserve force, ready to be deployed in case of emergencies. The EC has already issued instructions to the concerned forces in this regard.

The secretary further said that the Ministry of Home Affairs will act as the lead coordinator on matters relating to law and order. The Election Commission will oversee and coordinate the overall security situation and, to that end, a central monitoring cell will be formed.

On the role of the army, the EC secretary stated that the army’s judicial powers have been extended until 28 February of next year, and they will continue to exercise those powers during this period.
