Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus has expressed deep concern over the devastating fire that swept through the Karail slum in Dhaka, leaving many families homeless.
In a condolence message issued just after midnight on Tuesday, he conveyed sympathy to all affected families and wished a swift recovery for those injured in the blaze.
“The suffering of families who have lost their homes in the Karail slum fire is a matter of sorrow for all of us,” Professor Yunus said. “The government will ensure all necessary assistance for the rehabilitation of those affected.”
He said the authorities concerned have been instructed to immediately intensify rescue and relief operations in the fire-hit area.
The Chief Adviser also directed officials to identify the cause of the blaze and to take effective measures to prevent similar incidents in the future, particularly in densely populated informal settlements.
According to Fire Service officials, the fire broke out around 5:22pm on Tuesday in the Karail slum area of Tejgaon in the capital. The blaze burned numerous homes to ashes, forcing many families to spend the night without shelter. An assessment of the full extent of the damage is underway.
