Khaleda Zia Hospitalized with Heart and Lung Infections

Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) Chairperson and former Prime Minister Begum Khaleda Zia has been diagnosed with infections in both her heart and lungs. She is currently receiving intensive medical care at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka under close observation by a specialized medical team.

Speaking to the media on Sunday night, Prof. FM Siddiqui, a member of her medical board, said Khaleda Zia had been experiencing frequent infections over the past several months. She was admitted to the hospital after developing simultaneous complications, including a severe chest infection.

Prof. Siddiqui noted that Khaleda Zia already suffers from long-standing cardiac issues. She has a permanent pacemaker and coronary stents, along with a pre-existing condition called mitral stenosis. The chest infection worsened her respiratory distress, prompting immediate hospitalization.

Upon admission, doctors conducted urgent tests and began treatment with antibiotics and other essential medications. The next 12 to 24 hours are considered crucial for assessing her condition, according to the medical board.

Following her admission, a meeting of the medical board—led by Prof. Shahabuddin Talukder and joined by specialists from Bangladesh, the UK, and the US—was held to review her test reports and treatment plan.

BNP Vice Chairman Prof. AZM Zahid Hossain stated that the medical team is providing the highest level of care and that the situation is not considered critically alarming at the moment. Further treatment decisions will depend on the next evaluation.

He added that Tarique Rahman and Dr. Zubaida Rahman have been in constant communication from London regarding her condition. Other family members are also present at the hospital.

The 79-year-old leader has long been suffering from arthritis, diabetes, kidney issues, lung complications, and eye problems. She traveled to London for advanced treatment on January 7 and returned to Dhaka on May 6 after 117 days.
