Extortion and corruption are discouraging businesspersons: Dr. Shafiqur Rahman

Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr. Shafiqur Rahman has said that extortion and corruption are damaging the country’s business environment.

Speaking at the Fourth Bangladesh Economic Conference held at a hotel in the capital on Saturday (29 November), he said extortion and corruption are discouraging businesspeople and even foreign investors.

The Jamaat chief said, “Both the rich and the poor are contributing to the economy. The economy must be established on fairness.”

Highlighting the need to transform the country’s population into human resources, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman said, “Red tape and criminal activities are increasing in various sectors of the economy, and in some cases, the state is aiding this wrongdoing. As a result, entrepreneurs are falling into crisis.”

He further said that although businesspeople are often labeled as ‘opportunists,’ they are compelled to shift positions with changes in government. Responsibility for this lies with the state and politicians.

Pointing out that a comfort zone for domestic and foreign investors has yet to be created, he said, “We must now take the oath to bell the cat.”

In the economic conference, Dr. Shafiqur Rahman added that the focus should not be on issuing certificates but on ensuring technical education. “Every household should become an industrial hub,” he said.

Noting that corruption is occurring even in the appointment of mosque imams and muezzins, the Jamaat Ameer said, “Everyone hates corruption, but people fail to resist greed when it comes to themselves. Political goodwill must be the foundation. We must move forward collectively for rational change.”

He stated that Jamaat’s goal is to build a society that nurtures professionalism, eliminates corruption, and ensures justice.
